Eradicate winter months

With each season weeds are seeding and growing.  If weeds were eradicated from a lawn volunteers will eventually grow because mother nature blows seeds throughout and her birds kindly give offerings with seeds, only to  happy to germinate where dropped.  If a healthy landscape is the goal it becomes  a constant and worthy monitoring  and on-going project.

Rye grass needs fertilization

Rye grass is seeded in the winter creating a soft, lush very green lawn when very little else is green.  Rye grass is both green and growing.  When there is something green AND  growing it needs to be fertilized.  Fertilizer isn't usually applied in the winter.  However In the winter the rye grass needs fertilizer to keep it healthy.

To bag or mulch?

Part of creating a beautiful lawn is neatness.  Some like to bag leaves thinking it is the only way to have a neat lawn.  Creating a mulch pile can be a great deal of work.  If a regular mowing schedule is maintained leaves can be mulched by using the mower to mulch the leaves and the lawns appearance will be neat and actually healthier.

When time to fertilize?

Fertilization is a critically important part of any lawn maintenance program.  But as the old adage goes 'timing is everything.'  Don't fertilize as soon as it starts warming up.  That is a wrong strategy, especially in Tallahassee were spring and winter weather is so fickle.  It is counterproductive to fertilizer prematurely, the grass just isn't ready to use the nutrients.  The weeds would be happy for the meal but the grass would not benefit from the application.
